How do we stand up for the “greater good”?

Arts education programs are the first to be heralded on grant applications and marketing pieces, but are often at the risk of being influenced by funding, artistic vision, and human resources. These undeniable forces not only affect the way we do our programming, but also how we work with one another. This mini-conference will focus on Competition vs. Collaboration, the “Bums-in-Seats” approach to education vs. creating meaningful arts education experiences for the greater community, and what it takes to make education programming both effective and responsive to your organizational limitation. 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. – Annual General Meeting

7:30 p.m. – 10:45 p.m. (approx.) – Student Dress Rehearsal of Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten

Hosted by the Canadian Opera Company, the events will take place at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts (145 Queen St. W., Toronto, ON) in a meeting room located directly behind the Box Office. The entrance to the Box Office is located at the SE corner of University Avenue and Queen St. W. or via Osgoode Station on the TTC University/Spadina line.

Participants are invited to attend the dress rehearsal of the COC’s production of Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten at 7:30 p.m. The opera is approximately three hours and 15 minutes with two intermissions. One complimentary ticket only will be offered per attendee. Please note that individuals MUST attend the mini-conference or the AGM to be eligible for a dress rehearsal ticket.

Cost: The mini-conference is FREE for all paid Individual Members and paid Organizational Members (up to two delegates; $10 plus applicable taxes and fees per additional representative). How do you define a great arts education program? How do you measure its success? Who are the leaders in designing and running successful arts education programs?  How do we capture best practices in the field?

As arts education becomes an essential part of the work of arts organizations the need to answer these and other questions about best practices is on the forefront.

Join leading arts education programmers, advocates, academics and arts practitioners, including Jason Van Eyk (Executive Director, ArtsSmarts), Dr. Kathleen Gallagher (OISE, U of T), Nicole Fougère (Learning Through the Arts) and Jessica Dargo Caplan (Luminato) in a discussion on current best practices in creating, implementing, delivering and evaluating successful arts education and outreach programs.

PAONE Mini-Conference: Friday, May 11, 2012 in Stratford, Ontario

Our Education colleagues at The Stratford Shakespeare Festival have kindly offered to host the spring mini-conference in Stratford!

12 p.m. to 1 p.m.  – lunch, generously provided by The Stratford Shakespeare festival

1 p.m. to 4 p.m. – Mini-conference

8 p.m. – Each delegate will receive one complimentary ticket to see The Stratford Shakespeare Festival production of 42nd Street

Cost: FREE for PAONE member organizations (up to two delegates; $10 for each additional representative); $10 per person for non-members. Cash or cheque only. Please make cheques payable to “PAONE”.  

Mini-conference topic: Provide us with your suggestion for a topic, speaker or activity for our next mini-conference to ensure that the mini-conferences remain relevant to YOU. Submit your ideas to paonearts@gmail.com no later than Friday, March 16, 2012.

 It is the responsibility of each delegate to cover all transportation, meal (except for lunch) and accommodation costs. The PAONE board would be happy to help coordinate car-pooling.

YPT, in association with SHINE! Creative Coaching, present workshops to enliven, strengthen and empower your voice. Designed for teachers, these workshops are an introduction to voice work and will include techniques for creating greater voice-capacity and for preventing injury.
